In 1891 he went to Paris to continue his studies at the Sorbonne, where he obtained a degree in physics and mathematical sciences.
He met Pierre Curie, a professor at the School of Physics in 1894, and the following year they married.
She succeeded her husband as head of the Physics Laboratory at the Sorbonne, obtained her doctorate in science in 1903, and, following the tragic death of Pierre Curie in 1906, she took his place as professor of general physics at Faculty of Science, the first time a woman held this position.
The discovery of radioactivity by Henri Becquerel in 1896 inspired the Curie in their brilliant research and analysis, which led to the isolation of polonium, named after Maria's birthplace, and radio.
Curie has developed methods for separating radium from radioactive waste in sufficient quantities to allow its characterization and careful study of its properties, especially therapeutic properties.
