I believe that being fit is a really big of a deal, nowadays people make fun of the ones that aren't doing excercises or aren't really keeping up with being healthy.

In the first place, healthy and fit people have decreased risk for heart disease, diabetes, and other non-genetic related illnesses. It is projected that the children of today’s generation will be the first to have a lower life expectancy than the previous generation in two centuries.

In the second place, building off the last physical piece fitness will help you build confidence. I’ve seen many clients come into thegym nervous, unable to make eye contact, scared to ask questions for fear of being ridiculed, and generally unsure of themselves.

On the other hand, friends who don’t like fitness will feel uncomfortable and react in negative ways to your decision to make a positive change in your life. Also, you will have to work hard to gain the body you want! Something that many just give up after the 1st day of gym.

Finally, If you want to be happy and healthy, you can get fit, not only for the looks but also, as mentioned, for keeping your day to day life way healthier. It of course has it's negative and positive aspects but as long as it makes you happy, why not?
