Timpul Past Simple exprimă o acțiune de scurtă durată petrecută și încheiată în trecut, în timp ce Past Continuous arată un aspect progresiv, continuu al acțiunii aflate în derulare, tot în trecut.
Past Simple se traduce în română prin perfect compus sau perfect simplu, iar Past Continuous prin imperfect.
