1. when referring to an action that happened in the past and it did not take a long amount of time.
For example: Yesterday I went jogging in the park.
2. When a past situation was interrupted by another past aciton.
Ex: While I was baking a cake, my phone rang.

3. The ball hit me while I was watching a bird.
The person performing the action - watching, was interrupted by the ball that hit him -> past action interrupted by another past action
4. I think I left my bag at your house last night.
