On a dark rainy night, her footsteps were heard on the empty streets of the town. Natalie was coming home after finishing her shift at the hospital. She was tired and hungry and so, so cold. The freezing wind was blowing in her face reminding her that winter was near. God, she hated the cold! It dried her skin, made her eyes water and her nose runny, not to mention how easy it was to catch a cold.
Lost in her own thoughts, she barely registered the footsteps behind her, someone was approaching. Very fast.
So she started running without even thinking, what else could she do really?
She took a turn and immediately regretted it for the street was pitch black, the lights broken long ago. She continued on however, she couldn't turn back now after all, right?
"Wait! Miss!" a voice called behind her.
So she stopped and turned on her heels to face the man that has been running after her. He was out of breath, his chest rising and falling rapidly in an attempt to try and even his breathing.
"What is it?" She asked in a shy voice.
The mysterious man, still trying to catch his breath, held out his hand, only to show a navy blue wallet which Natalie immediately recognised as hers.
"You dropped this."
"Oh my God, thank you so much. And here I was thinking you wanted to rob me or something. I am so sorry." she said sounding as apologetic as she could.
"It's alright, just be more careful of your belongings next time."
She thanked the man again and continued her way home, which thankfully didn't have any other such incidents.
