I don’t think young people are more materialistic than in the past, rather there is nowadays a lot more material for us to serve a purpose.

The pursuit of happiness is the ultimate objective for us all and human beings have always been materialistic, we all want to save time, energy and money. We want whatever helps us get more time and whatever make us be more comfortable.

This basic instinct is programmed in us all. Without exception. Even the people who practice some form of minimalism. They are only fooling themselves.

But we are suffering from overload. The advertisements are everywhere. You get it online, TV, newspapers. Someone is always selling us something. We cannot escape. The more we try and escape the clutches of advertisers the more we will be exposed to it.

Marketing campaigns are created which really focuses on the idea that you will “loss out on something” if you don’t buy x and y product. This can be the case for a small number of products, but in most cases, we aren’t happier due to purchasing certain items.

Is this a bad thing? Not really, we need to buy and sell to make sure our economy continues to function so that governments can collect taxes to pay for those things we demand for free.
