I remember my first day of high school and how panicked I was as I realized I was going to be late! Yes, right from the first day, my mum and I underestimated the amount of time it would take to get to school. My mind started racing irrationally with thoughts like “am I going to make a bad impression? I also remember the radio coming on with the producers talking about their children’s first day of school. I kept thinking to myself that I wasn’t going to forget this and of course I haven’t.
But when I arrived to school I wasn’t late, people were just getting seated ready for the assembly. After 10 minutes during the head of years speech I kind of gave up on paying attention and opted to look through the little folder which I was given to fill in my information.
After the assembly I went to sit with my class in the designated seating zone. I met my colleagues and tried to make a good impression. I liked them from the start and knew that was going to be a great year. Indeed it was, I made a lot of new friends and we've made a lot of fun memories together.
I remember my first day of school, it felt like what I imagine it’s like visiting a new planet. I was sitting in a large room I've never been in before which was full of desks and children my age (just as confused as I was), all of them with different, unfamiliar faces. Like on a new planet though. I didn’t know any of them, so I was a little shy.
I still remember the girl on my right, wailing with tears, she was upset causing a big scene. She was really kicking around—fighting against her mom as she tried putting her on the mat that all the other kids were sitting on. She kept talking, “I don’t want to go to schooolll!”. She soon was sat there though.
After she stopped crying, the parents walked out the door and I remember the white light from the outside slowly getting slimmer and slimmer until it disappeared. The outside was gone now, so I turned around and looked at all those other kids, who were just as curious as I was.
Then the teacher sat down. I didn’t really pay attention to what she was saying or if she even said anything. And that was all. After that day I made a lot of friends and I started to like going to school and meeting them.
