THE BEST TIME FOR APPLES
One day, in a country-school for boys and girls, the teacher
said to the children:
"In a year there are four seasons: spring, summer, autumn and
winter. In spring, everything begins to grow, and there are many
flowers about the fields and in the gardens; in summer it is very
hot, it is time to reap the corn; in autumn, there are all kinds of
fruit, ripe and good to eat; in winter, it is very cold and snow
covers the ground. Now, Tom, you do not listen! Stand up! Tell
me, what is the best time to get apples?"
"It is when the farmer is at home, and there is no dog in the
garden," answered Tom.
And the whole class laughed.
