Books hold within their covers a world where characters live their lives under the reader`s eyes. To my mind, books are portable gardens,with comfort and agony,ups and downs. Books chronicle the seasons in people`s lives,they portray the vitality and drama of the world we live in. Reading enhances our ability to detect and understand human emotions,a crucial skill in social relationships. Books transport us beyond the confines of space and time,as we travel with the characters through the trials and tribulations that make up their stories. Books allow us access to new ideas,emotions and behaviours so we get to know the characters as if they were real people. While reading we can lose all sense of time and space and, by the end of the book we feel something has been added to our own lives because of the encounter we`ve had with the characters, although they are fictional. If we all read at least a book per month, I am sure we would be better individuals.
